Yellow Tent
6x6 oil on canvas board

Here's another one I did with a palette knife. I love this image, and have tried to paint it on a larger canvas twice, but don't like how the larger ones turned out compared to this one.
I really like to work with a palette knife, but my small knife is not in very good shape, and I haven't found a replacement for it. Utrecht and Blick don't seem to carry them small enough. Does anyone know where to find small palette knives?

My husband thinks this is messy looking. It's done with a palette knife - trying to loosen up again. But maybe he's right. When I see it up on the blog, it might look a little messy. Any opinions?

I just liked the grouping of these buildings - they looked like they were at different angles and all clustered together.

One of my favorite painters is Mitchell Johnson. He likes to paint buildings, I like to paint buildings. He is interested in showing depth in a scene. When I studied this scene, I discovered the depth was what drew me to it to paint it.
Another thing I've learned from Mitchell Johnson's paintings is that pretty much any scene is a paintable scene. I used to search and search for the perfect house or other scene to paint. And I thought 'oh yea, of course his paintings are all wonderful, because he gets to paint in beautiful places like Palo Alto and Europe'. And then I noticed that he was just painting ordinary scenes and making them wonderful with things like his viewpoint and color choices. That's when I took a look around and saw that there's more to paint than I'll ever have time to!
